Your favorite Halloween event that’s less spooky and more silly is back on October 29 at an all NEW location! The Marathon Jr. is the perfect opportunity for kids to celebrate fall and discover their inner-track star, all while giving their costume a test run! The 1-mile fun run will take kids around the Sports Backers Stadium track and The Diamond field! Before and after the race, your kiddos can enjoy mascots, games, a kid-friendly DJ, crafts, and more! All participants receive a t-shirt and finisher medal too! It’s sure to be a boo-tiful morning!

The Marathon Jr. is part of the Richmond Marathon—just happening two weeks earlier!

Children between 4-14 are able to register. One parent may run with a child aged 8 or younger. The parent does not need to register.

Entries are non-refundable, non-transferable and cannot be deferred to another year. All participants must be at least 4 years old on event day. 

Masks will be required by everyone attending the event, except when exercising.

Dress Up & Run

We’ll be awarding prizes to the most “BOO-tiful” costumes and you could be our Hallo-winner! In order to enter the costume contest, check in at the Sports Backers packet pick-up tent on race day from 8:00-8:45 a.m. and be dressed to impress! You must be a registered participant of the event to enter the costume contest.

Train With Us!

We want to help you get to the finish line of the Marathon Jr. Join the Fall Fit Club and get ready to have a blast as you go on a 8-week virtual fitness journey with kids from across RVA! Kids will complete 5 activities each week and have the chance to earn prizes along the way, including a Fall Fit Club t-shirt.


Participants will start and finish at the Sports Backers Stadium Track. Kids will begin with a clockwise lap around the track before exiting right onto Avenue of Champions. Turn right into the Soccer Lot and turn left into the Yellow Lot. Make a right into The Diamond’s gate and follow the baseball warning track clockwise. Exit The Diamond through the same gate, turn left into the Yellow Lot, and continue into the Soccer Lot, turning left. Participants will turn right to reenter Sports Backers Stadium and will continue clockwise around the track towards the finish line.

Rules & Helpful Hints

  • Parents may run with kids aged 8 and under. No bicycles, baby joggers/strollers or pets are allowed on the course.
  • Masks will be required by everyone attending the event, except when exercising.
  • As the kids enter the finish chute they will receive a medal and will be directed to the Kids Run Meeting Area.
  • Family and friends MUST meet runners in the Kids Run Meeting Area, which will be located in the stadium stands. There will be a designated entrance and two designated exits to this area. In order to alleviate congestion in the meeting area and exits, we ask that only one adult enter the meeting area to reunite with a child/children. No child will be able to leave the meeting area without an accompanying adult.
  • Please remember that the Kids Run Meeting Area is just a meeting area and not a holding area. It is your responsibility to make arrangements to meet your child at the meeting area after the race. Once reunited with your child, please proceed to one of the designated exits.
  • No animals are allowed in the Kids Run Meeting Area.
  • The volunteer check-in tent, which is the same location as packet pick-up, has been designated as the meeting site for people who are lost. If you and your child get separated, please report to the volunteer check-in tent.

Kids Run RVAKids Run RVA is an initiative of Sports Backers, the nationally recognized non-profit organizer of the Richmond Marathon, that motivates thousands of young people across our region to run and be active on a regular basis. Sports Backers is committed to improving the health of our children by encouraging routine physical activity, which is critical to their long-term growth and well-being.

Kids Run RVA provides free training opportunities for youth of all ages, abilities and backgrounds as well as funding to support school-based run clubs and events. For schools with fewer resources, Kids Run RVA grants may also cover shoes, transportation and event entry fees.

Donations are critical to the program’s success. Each time a child laces up his or her shoes, you will be giving them the most important gift of all: a path to good health and fitness!

Please park in the Green Lot at The Diamond. You can enter the Green Lot through the Robinhood Road entrance.

Packet Pick-Up

Packet pick-up will take place on Saturday, October 29, beginning at 8 a.m. and will be located at Sports Backers Stadium. Remember all participants must come to packet pick-up in order to receive your bib number and be allowed to participate. Come early and enjoy the event festival, which will feature all kinds of games and activities for the entire family!


All finishers will receive a finisher medal and event shirt.
